Mine Game: Promoting STEM and Scientific Thinking Through Educational eSports

Mine Game is an innovative project co-funded by the Erasmus+ programme that aims to strengthen interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) subjects among students aged 8–14 through competitive, game-based learning experiences built in Minecraft.

The project was developed in response to a growing concern: many students gradually lose motivation in scientific subjects during their school years. Mine Game addresses this challenge by combining education with structured eSports activities, transforming gameplay into an engaging and meaningful learning environment.

At the heart of the initiative is the design of STEM-themed challenges within Minecraft. These challenges are structured as competitive team-based activities that encourage students to apply scientific reasoning, mathematical logic, engineering principles, and problem-solving strategies in real time. By integrating competition with educational objectives, the project promotes active learning, collaboration, and critical thinking.

Mine Game provides educators with practical tools and structured guidance to integrate eSports into both formal and non-formal educational contexts. Its main outputs include:

  • A comprehensive handbook for teachers on designing STEM-based eSports activities
  • A structured Minecraft game environment featuring science-driven challenges
  • An online platform (Mine Game Foundry) offering resources, implementation guides, and community support

Through this approach, Mine Game demonstrates how digital gaming can become a powerful educational ally, transforming students from passive learners into active problem-solvers who engage with STEM concepts in dynamic and motivating ways.
