PAST Project – Reimagining Engagement in the Digital Age

One of the most pressing challenges in contemporary education is maintaining audience engagement, especially in digital and online learning environments. At DRC, we have observed how digitalisation has transformed classrooms — offering new opportunities, but also generating new risks: reduced attention spans, passive content consumption, and a growing disconnect between disciplines. Through PAST – Pathways Across STEAM and Time, we aim to address these challenges directly.

Why PAST Matters

Too often, History is taught as a static subject, while STEAM disciplines are approached in isolation from cultural and social contexts. At the same time, digital tools risk becoming platforms for passive learning rather than active exploration.

PAST responds by integrating History and STEAM into interdisciplinary learning pathways that are:

  • Interactive and inquiry-based
  • Digitally enriched but pedagogically grounded
  • Designed to stimulate creativity and critical thinking
  • Focused on real-world relevance

Expected Results of the Project

Within PAST, we are working toward the development of:

  • Innovative teaching tools that connect historical content with STEAM methodologies
  • Structured training modules for teachers
  • Classroom-ready interdisciplinary learning resources
  • Pilot implementations in partner schools
  • Guidelines to enhance digital engagement and participation
  • A European network for sharing best practices

As DRC, we contribute particularly to the design of digital resources, dissemination strategies and the development of tools that enhance interaction and engagement.

Addressing the Engagement Challenge

Maintaining audience engagement in online and blended environments requires more than technology. It requires meaningful design.

Through storytelling, project-based learning, collaborative activities and digital creativity, PAST seeks to transform students from passive recipients into active participants.

By connecting historical awareness with scientific inquiry and technological tools, we aim to create learning experiences that are not only informative but transformative.

For us at DRC, PAST represents an opportunity to continue our mission: promoting innovative, inclusive and research-based education across Europe.
